OMG! We had a great time at Bette's DC concert. She's as crude, funny and touching as ever. I laughed until I hurt but I also cried. I always cry when she sings "Stay with me, Baby", not because I'm regretting the "one who got away" - no such guy in my life - but just because of her raw emotions that come through her singing.
She was all over that stage in her high heels. I could hate her just for her ability to still wear heels. After all, she's 69! I tell myself I love comfortable shoes but who are we kidding - there are times when you just want to dress up, be slinky, be your mind's eye of your former self. That ship has sailed.
Before the show started, and it didn't start on time (not sure why - could it have been because of the typical DC crowd never shows up on time - half were still coming in 30 minutes after the published start time), hubby pointed out that the demographics around us were interesting. Sure enough, I looked around and realized it appeared that hundreds of large buses and just dumped thousands of people from either Sunset Village or South Beach at Verizon Center. Since it had been terribly hot all day, everyone looked like they were headed to the beach. I'm pretty sure hubby was one of the few guys under 60 with a female. The guys on the other side of 60 were with wives and one or both had a walker or a walking cane. Amazing that they could manage the steep climb to get to their seats.
Speaking of seats - we were on the floor in the center of Row Q. Never have I been so close to the stage at a major concert. I feared everyone around us would want to stand the entire time and dance in place. Well, that's how it started but ¾ way through Bette's first song they all pooped out and sat down. That was the last of the standing until the very last.
Back to the audience - some wanted their divineness to show and they dressed accordingly. This woman in her orange boa and tiara had arrived early by herself and seemed most comfortable.
When "Bette's Boys" came down the aisle they got an ovation and lots of people ran over to get their photos. I think the clapping was because the show hadn't started and we are all getting really bored. I decided a shot from my seat would have to do.
When the show did start it was irreverent and non-stop.
She definitely played to her demographics - lots of Viagra and memory loss jokes. She congratulated those of us in the audience who had driven to the concert because we could still drive after dark. She apparently hates the Kardashians and has a tendency to be a hoarder. Claims her friends say she puts the whore in hoarder. I could go on but the Washington Post had a great review (you'll have to do a copy & paste):
